Troop 5109 does not encourage the presence of smart devices during camping events or meetings as they can be a distraction and potential liability. However, the Troop recognizes the usefulness of these devices as tools when utilized correctly and in a proper manner consistent with all BSA rules and policies.
Please make sure these guidelines are followed and parents please discuss them with your Scouts.
GUIDELINES:
1. The completion of a Cyber Chip award is required before any Scout brings a device on scouting event. This is required by BSA to obtain the Scout (very first) rank as well. For more information, see https://www.scouting.org/training/youth-protection/cyber-chip/
2. The following devices are approved with limited, supervised use: smart phone and tablets.
3. Gaming devices like a Nintendo DS are not permitted.
4. Devices should be used for scouting purposes only. Examples include:
* Photos of activities (YPT guidelines must be observed)
* Used as a resource for merit badge classes
* Communication between troop members or camp staff
5. The troop leadership has the ability to ban devices from specific events. For example, if the troop is participating in a whitewater rafting weekend where a device could be easily damaged or lost.
6. Scouts who are of the rank of Tenderfoot or lower must contact a Patrol Leader before calling or texting home. The Patrol Leader will work with the Scout and an adult leader to determine if a call home is needed and then the call or text can be placed.
7. Lights out means devices are also turned off.
8. The troop is not responsible for lost or damaged devices.
9. Again, we encourage parents to add cell phone numbers of adult leaders to their personal contact lists in case of emergency or for transportation issues.
