Boards of Review

1 min read

When Scouts have completed all the requirements for a rank, including the Scoutmaster Conference, they appear before a Board of Review (BOR). This is like a panel-style interview, consisting of at least three and not more than six troop leaders (registered adults). Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters, and the Scout’s relatives may not serve on the BOR. The review has three purposes:

bulletTo make sure the work has been learned and completed.
bulletTo find out what kind of experience she is having in the patrol and troop.
bulletTo encourage the Scout to progress further.

The BOR is not a time to retest the Scout. It can also serve as an opportunity to review and offer encouragement to those Scouts who are not advancing. Any questions about the BOR mechanics or specifics can be researched in the BSA Guide to Advancement (available in a searchable format online).

Boards of Review will be held regularly as determined by the Advancement Chairperson. It is the responsibility of each Scout to appear in complete Class A uniform, with the Scout Handbook. Star, Life, and Eagle ranks may require additional information to be documented and reviewed with the Board.
